CALLOUT – Disaster Response and Hurricane Helene

Updated Thursday, October 3

As the response continues, we are winding feeding operations down and transitioning to clean up and recovery. State assessors have just begun their Initial Damage Assessments (IDA), and the information is beginning to come in.

We are grateful for the incredible response from individuals and churches who have volunteered to serve. We are currently contacting those who have registered directly and will also provide updates on this page.

We currently anticipate beginning cleanup operations in the next two weeks, but assessments take time, and it may take longer to have requests in place for volunteers. This will be a long response, and we are committed to serving for the long haul.

Impact Disaster Response began feeding operations Tuesday, October 1 in response to Hurricane Helene. We are preparing meals to meet the need in Damascus, Virginia. The team is serving at Abingdon Baptist Church and hosted nearby at Highlands Fellowship. Volunteers from several local churches supported the initial setup alongside volunteers who traveled to the site yesterday.

Even as volunteers prepare meals this week, we are beginning to shift toward the long cleanup response ahead. We are grateful for all who have registered their availability and for their patience as we begin to receive requests and transition to a cleanup site. We will update those who have signed up for next week by Wednesday and share information for next week’s teams by Friday. If you are able to serve, please sign up below.

We are seeking volunteers who can serve in all areas – feeding, assessment, cleanup, chainsaw, and crisis care. You do not need to be trained – on-site training will be provided. Please register your availability by following the link below. We will continue to share updates as they become available. All who register will be contacted directly with updates.
BGAV and Impact Disaster Response have always entered a response with a view to the long-term, and we need your help as we work alongside these communities for the next several months. Please consider how you can serve, please consider giving to support the recovery, and please pray for those affected and those responding.
