Impact Missions Monthly Newsletter Devotion – October

-by Cadance Tyler

October 9-11 is the BGAV Fall Youth Retreat weekend. Youth and their leaders will gather in the mountains at Eagle Eyrie for worship, rest, and a lot of fun. The theme for the weekend will be centered around Matthew 5:6, which states: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

This passage is part of the beatitudes where Jesus highlights the tension between what is and what will be in the kingdom of God. Humanity continues to define what success and happiness looks like. Our culture tells us that wealth, power, and a self-centered attitude create the ultimate life, but this passage is a reminder that the reality of the kingdom is not of this world. In the beatitudes, we see that our assumptions about how the world works isn’t so in God’s kingdom. God doesn’t prioritize the rich. God doesn’t lift up the powerful.

As Christians, our priorities should match up with God’s priorities. We should have a hunger for things to be made right in our communities and world. We should seek to be transformed by God’s love so that our actions are in sync with our beliefs. If we look outside, we can see spaces where justice is absent. We can see situations where there is little hope. May we be Christians whose desires are in line with God’s reality, not our own. This week, let’s have this be our prayer: “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).
