October Emphasis: Tackling Hunger

October has long been identified as a time for people to rally resources in support of those in their community and across the globe who suffer from food insecurity and hunger-related concerns.  Across the world, hunger affects an estimated 653 million people with no respect for borders, conflicts, race, religion, gender, age, nor a host of other factors. A disproportionate number of those who live in a state of hunger are young children – again, without discrimination.  And, bringing it closer to home, even our own Commonwealth is “in line” with global numbers with one in eight people (over 1 million people) facing issues of hunger every day.  And, of this number over 260,000 are under the age of 12.  This number is increasing each year due to the rise in overall costs of living including rent, food, healthcare and the loss of aid programs.  While there are a number of ways that these concerns are being discussed in the halls of governments, there are many avenues of assistance where we can be involved today.  Working in a food pantry, sharing food, providing access to food, reducing other household costs, etc. are all ways that can help those struggling to put food on the table.  Another option could include a gift to the BGAV Hunger Fund.

As of October 1st of this year the BGAV has been able to provide over $98,000 to 40 different churches, district associations, and other partners which has assisted them in providing assistance to over 10,000 families located across Virginia.  Additionally, the BGAV Hunger Fund typically provides between $25,000 – $40,000 in assistance to several of our international partners each year.  Any gift, no matter the size, is maximized and truly makes a difference for those in need.

Throughout all of the incredible opportunities before us to share food with those who are hungry we also share the hope that we have found in Christ.  Hope for a brighter day.  Hope for a better tomorrow.  And hope for life in Christ here on earth and for eternity.
