Sometimes a youth event turns into an intergenerational time of worship and spiritual growth. That’s what happened at the recent BGAV Fall Youth Retreat at Eagle Eyrie October 10-12. Fourteen churches gathered on the mountain for a weekend full of worship, learning, and fun. The weekend theme was centered on the Body of Christ, and students were challenged to boldly live out their faith in community when they returned home on Sunday.
The majority of the one hundred and eighty participants were between the ages of eleven and eighteen, but the adult leaders weren’t observers on the sidelines. Youth ministers led by example throughout the weekend, and the result was a glimpse of the Body of Christ in action. Participants of all ages sang together and lifted their hands in worship.
Minds were engaged in breakouts around worship, mental health, and recreation. Groups spent time together on hikes, around the gaga ball pit, and at a late-night s’more event. The sound of laughter and excitement followed the youth wherever they traveled that weekend.
Psalm 100:4-5 states: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” The BGAV Youth Retreat is not a new event. Generations of Virginia Baptists have often gathered in time of rest and retreat. Though generations change, the desire to come together with other churches for worship and connection does not. I am thankful for the church leaders and volunteers who spent time away for a weekend shepherding and connecting with youth. It’s a privilege to hear one hundred and eighty voices singing praise together.
The function of the Body of Christ isn’t individual parts with their own agenda. The Body of Christ is supposed to work together to give glory to God. That might look like being in church on a Sunday morning, serving in the community, or spending time away for a weekend of connection and retreat. All are important ways to engage and to live faithfully in our calling as the church.
